Public holidays in Spain 2026 and 2027: national and regional calendar
Every public holiday in Spain for 2026 and 2027 in tables, region by region and taken from each official gazette. With the long weekends, what happens when a holiday falls on a Sunday or a Saturday and how to keep any of them from coming off annual leave.

Every year, between spring and autumn, each Spanish region and then the state gazette (BOE) publish the public holidays for the following year. The result is a different work calendar in each region: Maundy Thursday is not a holiday in Catalonia or the Valencian Community but Easter Monday is, and in 2027 Monday 16 August will be a holiday in some regions and a working day in others.
Here you have, in tables, the national public holidays and those of every Spanish autonomous community for 2026 and 2027, taken from the official rule each one publishes, plus the long weekends, what happens when a holiday falls on a Sunday or a Saturday, and how to make sure none of them is ever taken off anybody’s annual leave.
In short. Spain has at most 14 public holidays a year, paid and not to be made up: 12 set by the state and each region, and 2 local ones per municipality. In 2026 8 are common to the whole country. In 2027 Easter falls at the end of March (Maundy Thursday on the 25th and Good Friday on the 26th), 1 May and 25 December fall on a Saturday, and 15 August on a Sunday, so each region decides whether to move it to Monday 16 or swap it for a holiday of its own. As of 27 September 2026, every region except Madrid, Ceuta and Melilla has published its 2027 calendar.
How many public holidays Spain has and who sets them
Article 37.2 of the Workers’ Statute sets a maximum of fourteen public holidays a year, paid and not to be made up, of which two are local. The other twelve come from three sources:
- National holidays that cannot be changed: New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Labour Day, Assumption Day, Spain’s National Day, All Saints’ Day, Constitution Day, the Immaculate Conception and Christmas Day.
- National holidays each region may replace with one of its own: 6 January, Maundy Thursday and a choice between St Joseph’s Day (19 March) and St James’ Day (25 July). That is why Maundy Thursday is a holiday almost everywhere except Catalonia and the Valencian Community, which swap it for Easter Monday.
- The Monday after a national holiday that falls on a Sunday. The day off moves to Monday, but the region may swap that Monday for a holiday of its own. That explains 2 November and 7 December 2026, and 16 August 2027.
Local holidays are proposed by each town council and published in the regional or provincial gazette. The calendar that applies to each employee is the one of their workplace: the national, regional and local holidays of where they work, not those of the company’s head office.

National public holidays in Spain in 2027
In 2027 Easter falls at the end of March: Easter Sunday is the 28th. These nine days are public holidays in every region that has already published its calendar:
| Date | Day | Holiday |
|---|---|---|
| 1 January | Friday | New Year’s Day |
| 6 January | Wednesday | Epiphany |
| 26 March | Friday | Good Friday |
| 1 May | Saturday | Labour Day |
| 12 October | Tuesday | Spain’s National Day |
| 1 November | Monday | All Saints’ Day |
| 6 December | Monday | Constitution Day |
| 8 December | Wednesday | Immaculate Conception |
| 25 December | Saturday | Christmas Day |
Three things shape the year:
- 15 August falls on a Sunday. Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Canary Islands and Castile and León move it to Monday 16 August. The other regions that have published have swapped it for a holiday of their own, and Extremadura moves it to Monday 11 October, next to Spain’s National Day.
- 1 May and 25 December fall on a Saturday, and a Saturday holiday does not move. The same happens in Catalonia with its National Day (11 September) and in the Valencian Community with its own day (9 October).
- All Saints’ Day and Constitution Day fall on a Monday, and the Immaculate Conception on a Wednesday, so the first week of December brings the longest break of the year.

Canary Islands Day, 30 May, falls on a Sunday and does not move.
Aran: Easter Monday (29 March) is replaced by 17 June, Aran Day.
Navarre: 3 December, St Francis Xavier, is a local holiday across the whole region, so each town council only sets the second one.
The Community of Madrid usually publishes its calendar at the end of September, and the BOE gathers the whole country in a single resolution in October. We will update this page as soon as they are out.
Long weekends: the rest of 2026 and all of 2027
To plan leave and rotas, these are the long weekends left by the common holidays. Each region has more, depending on its own and its local holidays.
- Monday 12 October 2026: three days across Spain.
- Monday 2 November 2026: three days where All Saints’ Day has moved.
- Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December 2026: four days in a row where the 7th is a holiday. Elsewhere, one day of leave on the Monday does it.
- Friday 25 December 2026 and Friday 1 January 2027: two three-day weekends.
- Easter 2027: Thursday 25 to Sunday 28 March, and until Monday 29 where Easter Monday is a holiday.
- Tuesday 12 October 2027: with Monday 11 off, four days. In Extremadura, the 11th is already a holiday.
- Monday 1 November 2027: three days across Spain.
- Monday 6 and Wednesday 8 December 2027: with Tuesday 7 off, five days in a row, Saturday 4 to Wednesday 8, for a single day of leave.
Local holidays
Each municipality has up to two local holidays a year, usually its patron saint festivities. The town council proposes them and the region or province publishes them in its gazette, generally a few months after the regional calendar. The 2027 ones are already out in Asturias, the Canary Islands, La Rioja and the Region of Murcia, for example.
They are the ones most often forgotten. A company with offices in two towns has two different calendars even within the same province, and each employee follows the one of their workplace. For remote workers, it is worth stating in the remote work agreement which calendar applies.
A holiday on a Sunday, on a Saturday or during annual leave
On a Sunday, the day off moves to the following Monday (article 45.2 of Royal Decree 2001/1983), unless the region swaps that Monday for a holiday of its own (article 37.2 of the Workers’ Statute). That is why you have to check each region’s calendar and not just the national one.
On a Saturday, it does not move. Someone who works Monday to Friday does not gain a day off unless their collective agreement says otherwise; someone who works Saturdays gets that day off.
During annual leave, it depends on how leave is counted. If leave is set in working days, as many collective agreements do, a holiday inside the period uses no day at all. If it is set as thirty calendar days, it runs from date to date and the holiday falls inside it. We explain it with examples in holiday entitlement in Spain in 2026.
If it has to be worked, the company pays those hours with a premium of at least 75% or makes up for them with time off (article 47 of Royal Decree 2001/1983). Many collective agreements improve that minimum. And that working day is recorded like any other.
How Quantummycos handles it
In Quantummycos the company’s public holidays and closures live in the Work calendar, and from there they flow on their own into each employee’s leave, absences and clock-ins:
- National holidays arrive on their own. Every company always has this year’s and next year’s national holidays without anybody copying them, and when the year changes, the following year’s appear.
- Yours, only once. The regional holidays and Monday transfers from the tables above, and the local ones of your town, are marked on the calendar with their name, just like a company closure such as 24 December or a week in August. The following year, one button copies last year’s days to the same date so you only review the ones that move.
- They never use up leave. A marked day does not count in any absence: a week off with a holiday in the middle is four days, not five. If the holiday is added later, the requests that include it are recalculated on their own.
- They show where they matter. They appear struck through, with their name, in the absence calendar on the web and in the mobile app. And whoever opens the clock-in on a holiday sees a notice, although they can still clock in if they are working that day.
- The assistant knows them. Anyone on the team can ask the app’s AI “when is the next public holiday?” or “are we working on 8 December?”, and it answers with their company’s calendar.
The Work calendar is part of the Enterprise plan. You can see how the module works or open the app and try it with your team.

Frequently asked questions
As every year, up to fourteen: twelve set by the state and each region, and two local ones per municipality. In every region that has already published its calendar, 1 and 6 January, Good Friday (26 March), 1 May, 12 October, 1 November, 6 and 8 December and 25 December are holidays. 1 May and 25 December fall on a Saturday.
Maundy Thursday is 25 March and Good Friday the 26th. Good Friday is a holiday across Spain, and Maundy Thursday in every published region except Catalonia and the Valencian Community. Easter Monday, 29 March, is a holiday in the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Navarre, the Basque Country, La Rioja and the Valencian Community.
It depends on the region. 15 August falls on a Sunday and the day off moves to Monday 16 in Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Canary Islands and Castile and León. The other regions that have published their calendar have swapped it for a holiday of their own, and Extremadura moves it to Monday 11 October.
It does not move. Someone who works Monday to Friday does not gain a day off unless their collective agreement says otherwise, and someone who works Saturdays gets that day off. Only national holidays that fall on a Sunday move to Monday, and even then each region may swap that Monday for a holiday of its own.
No, public holidays are separate paid rest. If leave is set in working days, a holiday inside the period uses no day. If it is set as thirty calendar days, it runs from date to date and the holiday falls inside the period.
Those of where each workplace is: the national ones, that region’s and that municipality’s local ones. A single company can have as many calendars as workplaces, even within the same province.
If, for technical or organisational reasons, the holiday cannot be taken, the company pays the hours worked with a premium of at least 75%, unless it makes up for them with time off (article 47 of Royal Decree 2001/1983). Many collective agreements improve that minimum.
The state resolution that gathers every region’s holidays is usually published in October: the 2026 one came out on 28 October 2025. Before that, each region publishes its own in its gazette, and as of 27 September 2026 only the Community of Madrid, Ceuta and Melilla are still pending.
