How many public holidays there are and who sets them
The Workers’ Statute sets a maximum of fourteen public holidays a year, paid and not to be made up (article 37.2). Twelve are set by the state and each region, and two by each town council.
Some are the same across Spain, such as New Year’s Day, Good Friday, 1 May, 12 October or Christmas Day. Others can be swapped by each region for a holiday of its own: 6 January, Maundy Thursday and St Joseph’s or St James’ Day. And when a national holiday falls on a Sunday, each region decides whether the day off moves to Monday or is swapped for another holiday. That is why every region has its own calendar.
Each employee gets the holidays of where their workplace is, not those of the company’s head office: a company with offices in two regions has two calendars and, with local holidays, one per town.
Local holidays
Each town also has up to two local holidays, usually its patron saint festivities. The town council proposes them and the regional or provincial gazette publishes them: check them before closing leave or rotas.
Frequently asked questions
Up to fourteen in each town: the 9 common to the whole country, each region’s own up to twelve, and two local ones. The common ones are 1 January (New Year’s Day), 6 January (Epiphany), 26 March (Good Friday), 1 May (Labour Day), 12 October (Spain’s National Day), 1 November (All Saints’ Day), 6 December (Constitution Day), 8 December (Immaculate Conception) and 25 December (Christmas Day).
Maundy Thursday is 25 March and Good Friday 26 March, a public holiday across Spain. Maundy Thursday is a holiday in every region except Catalonia and the Valencian Community. Easter Monday, 29 March, is a holiday in the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Navarre, the Basque Country, La Rioja and the Valencian Community.
Falling on a Saturday, so not moved: Labour Day (1 May) and Christmas Day (25 December). 15 August falls on a Sunday: Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Canary Islands, Castile and León and the Community of Madrid move the day off to Monday 16 August, and in the other regions that Monday is a working day.
The day off moves to the following Monday (article 45 of Royal Decree 2001/1983), unless the region swaps that Monday for a holiday of its own. That is why the same Monday can be a holiday in some regions and a working day in others.
It does not move. Someone who works Monday to Friday does not gain a day off unless their collective agreement says otherwise, and someone who works Saturdays gets that day off.
No: a public holiday is separate paid rest. If leave is set in working days, a holiday inside the period uses no day; if it is set as thirty calendar days, it runs from date to date and the holiday falls inside it.
If the holiday cannot be taken for technical or organisational reasons, the company pays those hours with a premium of at least 75%, unless it makes up for them with time off (article 47 of Royal Decree 2001/1983). Many collective agreements improve that minimum, and that working day is recorded like any other.
Those of where each workplace is: the national ones, that region’s and that town’s local ones. A single company has as many calendars as workplaces, even within the same province.
Every autumn, in the BOE, with the following year’s holidays for every region. The 2027 one was published on 13 October 2026. Local holidays are published later in each region’s or province’s gazette.
